Did you know? Today is National Mutt Day! Yep, it’s true. This nationwide celebration of mixed-breed pups is marked twice annually – and has been since 2005. Twice, you say? Yes, twice. December 2nd and July 31st, to be exact. Along with lifting up these one-of-a-kind four-legged friends, National Mutt Day is all about raising awareness of the often dire plight of mutts in the shelter system. We won’t enter the fray of mixed-breed versus pedigreed, but we sure won’t miss this opportunity to list just a few of the things we think make mutts great!
They’re one-in-a-million: Sure, you can do DNA testing on your dog if you like, but one of the many qualities that make mutts so unique is that they ARE so different! These “happy accidents” can reveals character and personality traits that may never be revealed otherwise.
They have fewer health issues: While there’s no hard health data comparing various mixed breeds to pure bred dogs, this much is true: pure breed dogs are more susceptible to particular illnesses and conditions. Do the math on that one.
More bang for the buck: Being a responsible dog owner does have some costs involved, but adopting a healthy shelter mutt is far less expensive than buying a pedigreed dog from a breeder. Plus, a shelter pup most often has its first shots, and has likely been spayed or neutered.
Mutts make YOU a lifesaver: Yes, you! There are millions of dogs in shelters all across the country. Adopting one – or keeping one out of the shelter system in the first place – makes you a bone-a-fide hero! (See what we did there?) And while we can’t prove it, we’re pretty confident your rescued or adopted mixed-breed considers you to be one-of-a-kind, too!
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate National Mutt Day, consider making a donation to your local no-kill shelter, or take some time to volunteer. There’s plenty of opportunity out there!
